Debate Watch: Dubie’s Opponents Flock Together to Tout Higher Taxes, Gov’t Spending

Aug 12, 2010

Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie’s campaign for governor criticized the five candidates competing in the Democratic primary for making promises yesterday that will raise taxes and suffocate businesses.

“This is the same tired, pro-tax, anti-job rhetoric we’ve been hearing for months,” campaign manager Corry Bliss said in response to the Democratic debate hosted Wednesday by the Burlington Free Press. “They all want to raise taxes and spend taxpayer dollars on dozens of new programs. When Vermont faces a $120 million deficit and $2 billion in unfunded obligations to teachers and state workers in retirement, it is irresponsible to promise additional programs without clearly identifying how they will pay for them. As the lieutenant governor travels the state, he constantly hears taxpayers saying they’re maxed out. Obviously, his opponents are not listening to Vermonters.”

Bliss said dozens of new government programs Lt. Gov. Dubie’s opponents have promised during their forums will suffocate businesses and job creation by raising taxes. Some highlights from Wednesday’s debate:

  • New taxes on “junk food.” – Doug Racine
  • Develop infrastructure for long-distance learning. – Deb Markowitz
  • Hire six new employees in Tax Dept. – Susan Bartlett

These programs are in addition to dozens of increased government expenditures announced in previous forums, such as:

  • All high school students should spend a semester abroad. – Matt Dunne, 1/25/10
  • Food for families at home, “not just school lunches or school breakfasts.” – Deb Markowitz, 6/15/10
  • Laptop computer for every 6th to 8th grade student – Peter Shumlin, 1/25/10
  • Free school lunch for all Vermont schoolchildren, not just for those who qualify based on family income guidelines. – Susan Bartlett, 5/13/10
  • Build satellite campuses around the state for better access to UVM and state college system – Doug Racine, 6/30/10

“Brian’s opponents have all proposed dozens of new programs without detailing how they are going to pay for them,” Bliss said. “One thing is clear – if they have their way, Vermonters will pay higher taxes. That will make it more difficult for businesses to create jobs, homeowners to stay in their homes, and those trying to earn a living stay in Vermont. All of Brian’s potential opponents are on record for supporting tax increases.”

Bliss said Lt. Gov. Dubie offers a clear choice to Vermonters who want a stronger focus on building the economy, controlling state spending, and making Vermont more affordable.

As Lt. Gov. Dubie has said repeatedly, by creating jobs and cutting taxes, we can make our economy stronger and Vermonters will have more money left in their own pockets.

Dubie Campaign Soars Past Grassroots Goal a Month Ahead of Schedule

Aug 09, 2010

Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie said Monday he was thrilled to announce his campaign has surpassed an ambitious grassroots goal – knocking on 40,000 Vermonters’ doors by Labor Day – a full month ahead of schedule.

“I’m so encouraged by the tremendous enthusiasm surrounding this campaign,” Dubie said. “It’s not only from the hardworking volunteers and staff walking door-to-door, but also from supporters who are excited to talk about their hopes for Vermont’s future on their doorsteps, driveways and porches.”

Early this summer, Dubie’s campaign set a goal of knocking on 40,000 doors by Labor Day (www.40kByLaborDay.com). Supporters hit that mark on Thursday, August 5, at a home in Milton (see photo). It has now set a new goal of 50,000 doors by Labor Day and 60,000 doors by Election Day on November 2.

Matt Zahn knocked on door #40,000 in Milton on Thursday

“This is just one sign of the momentum behind my campaign for governor,” said Dubie, who has knocked on more than 2,000 doors himself, including in neighborhoods in Hardwick, Swanton, Essex, Rutland, Bennington, Brattleboro and Barre. “In every neighborhood, I hear the same thing – we need to grow the economy and create jobs. My message of cutting taxes and making Vermont more affordable is clearly resonating across the state.”

More than 7,500 Vermonters have asked for “Brian Dubie for Governor” yard signs during door knocking and online outreach. They will be delivered this month.

Dubie Honored to Get Unanimous Endorsement of Fire Fighters’ Union

Jul 28, 2010

Brian Dubie is excited to welcome the support of the Professional Fire Fighters of Vermont, which today announced it has unanimously endorsed Dubie's campaign for governor.

“I have tremendous respect for the work these brave men and women do,” Dubie said. “Their commitment to serving their communities is an inspiration, and I am honored to have their support in my campaign for governor of Vermont.”

The union represents fire fighters, EMTs and paramedics from 12 municipal departments across Vermont – Barre City, Barre Town EMTs, Bellows Falls, Brattleboro, Burlington, Hartford, Montpelier, Rutland City, St. Johnsbury, South Burlington, Springfield and Williston. They respond to 45,000 emergency calls a year and cover an estimated 40 percent of the state’s population.

“Brian cares about Vermont communities, and that’s important to us,” said Matt Vinci, a captain with the South Burlington Fire Dept. and president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Vermont. “The ability to deliver effective and efficient emergency services across Vermont is critical. We have worked through several issues with Brian as chair of the Governor’s Homeland Security Advisory Council to be able to ensure Vermont is a safe place to live, work and raise a family.”

Vinci noted the union considered all candidates, but said Brian Dubie has relationships and lines of communications that have been established with the union’s members over many years.

“This is not about party affiliation,” Vinci said, noting the union had also endorsed Democrats Steve Howard for Lt. Governor and Jim Condos for Secretary of State. “That points to the credibility of our process. It’s about who has been there for us and for the issues important to our members being able to deliver vital services to Vermonters.”

Vinci said the union’s members will be working hard until November campaigning for Brian Dubie. “Our members are very engaged in the political process,” he said. “We’re a small organization but have an immense amount of resources. We are excited about working from all corners of the state to ensure Brian is our next governor.”

Fire fighters will be knocking on doors, waving signs, and working on Dubie’s behalf to get voters to the polls. Every candidate the union has endorsed in a statewide race has gone on to victory on Election Day.

“Brian connects very well with my members,” Vinci said. “His time serving our country, his affiliation with a union as a captain with American Airlines, his values for the issues important to working Vermonters – all of it came together for our unanimous endorsement.”
